I only play outdoor pickleball here in the Bay Area, California, so I have been able to test the best outdoor pickleball balls to present to you for 2026. I also share which balls I would not purchase again.

And because I enjoy balls so much, I try to play with a new ball almost every single game to really understand how different balls play on the court.

Here’s my top outdoor pickleball ball choices:

  1. Best Outdoor Pickleball Ball: Franklin Sports Outdoor Pickleballs – X-40 – Check Price on Amazon
  2. Runner-up Best: JOOLA HC-40 Hardcourt Pickleball Balls – Check Price on Amazon
  3. Best For Cold Weather: Selkirk Sport Pro 1 Ball – Check Price on Amazon
  4. Best for Spin: Core Pickleball Ball – Check Price on Amazon
  5. Best For Beginners: Dinkly outdoor pickleball balls – Check Price on Amazon
  6. Best Budget Under $0.75: Navona outdoor pickleball balls – Check Price on Amazon
  7. Runner Up Budget Under $0.75: Asbocar USAPA Approved Pickleballs – Check Price on Amazon
  8. Best on Amazon
  9. I Would Not Buy Again: Onix Pure 2 Outdoor Pickleball Balls – Check Price on Amazon

In terms of budget balls, I was able to find outdoor pickleball balls in the $0.60 – $0.70 range recently that I will discuss later. That’s a lot of balls though. That said, I just purchased the famous Erne pickleball machine that houses 150 outdoor pickleball balls, so I guess it’s not out of the realm of reason. For that purchase though, I may purchase the absolute cheapest outdoor pickleball balls I could find.

How Long Do Outdoor Pickleball balls supposedly last?

I play my balls for a while, but I recently read that pickleball balls have a maximum performance of 3-5 games. That said, I have played many more games than that with the same balls.

That said, I cannot find myself purchasing pickleballs as often as tennis balls, so I took that with a grain of salt.

For example, I have been playing many matches with my X-40’s and haven’t seen much variability in game use.

1. Best Outdoor Pickleball Ball

The Franklin Outdoor X-40 balls may be one of the most marketed pickleball balls out there, but is it worth the hype?

I believe so.

The ball is lighter than other balls I’ve played with in the past, but the bounce profile feels really good.

Also, this ball has quite a bit of pop to it, which makes a fun playing experience, and overall my favorite ball. In addition, many tournaments use this ball, so if you’re considering tournament play, you may want to opt for these balls.

Finally, when purchasing in bulk, its actually comparable to my favorite budget ball, so I’ve considered going 50/50 with a friend and purchasing 100 balls.

In terms of weight, the Franklin X-40 pickleball balls are 26 grams.

2. Runner-up Best Ball

The outdoor pickleball ball that most surprised me was the new Joola Primo HC-40 hardcourt outdoor pickleball balls.

I played with these outdoor balls this week, and I would argue that these feel very similar to the X-40, so if you are not a ball snob, and these are cheaper, I may snag a box to compare.

The ball plays very nicely and isn’t too slipper like some balls and isn’t too soft like other balls. In terms of durability, I still have not cracked a Joola ball although I know the day will be coming.

Thankfully, when I weighed these balls, the Joola outdoor pickleball balls also weight 26 grams like the X-40s above.

Let’s talk about the best heavy duty pickleball balls.

3. Best For Cold Weather

When you play pickleball in cold weather in California, you expect balls to crack, so it’s really a game of how to get more heavy duty balls to crack less.

After hearing mixed reviews on the Onix Dura Fast 40 balls, I decided to try the Selkirk Pro S1. These balls did the trick. These balls feels very heavy duty with thicker construction than the Franklin X-40s, so these balls are perfect for cold weather.

I don’t love playing with more heavy duty balls, but if you are going to play during the winter, consider the Selkirk Pro S1s.

Thankfully, they also weight in as 26 grams, so even though the balls feel heavier duty, that doesn’t mean they are heavier.

4. Best For Spin

I like to compete pickleball balls against each other to see which has the best characteristics. Recently, I was testing Core outdoor pickleball balls with my new Core Reaction Pro Paddle.

I have never seen a spin on a pickleball like the core pickleball balls, and I have played with a lot of outdoor balls.

One memory, in particular, is that I was on the left line returning a serve, and I was able to put a spin that was barely missed the back left line, but it had such a huge spin that it nearly hit the fence.

I have never done that before with any ball, which is why I believe the Core outdoor pickleball balls are the best right now for spin.

After testing the Core pickleball paddle and outdoor pickleball balls, I was really excited about this brand.

Best For Beginners

The Dinkly outdoor pickleball balls are really good for beginners at around $1.25 per ball. These balls plays most similar to the Selkirk Pro S1 which are the best balls for cold weather, so if you have to choose one, you may choose these if you want a budget ball.

My one concern is that one of my balls had a piece of plastic in the holes that got stuck inside the ball, but in terms of playability, these balls will do the trick if you are a beginner.

I personally would also prefer these balls to all the budget balls under $0.75.

Here’s a picture of what my Dinkly balls weighed in at.

Best Glow In The Dark Ball

Ever play Glow In the Dark pickleball? It’s the best and potentially the most dangerous you can get playing this sport outside of perhaps playing during lightening storm on a metal court at the top of a hill.

I love the Franklin outdoor glow in the dark balls. These balls tend to be around $3.33, so they are significantly less than other LED balls that cost $5-$6 per ball.

In addition, you let these ball naturally light up during the day which allows you to play with these during the night.

Here’s a picture of the glow in the dark balls.

Let’s talk about the best budget balls under 75 cents next.

Best Budget Amazon Under $0.75

The Navona outdoor pickleball balls is one the best budget pickleball balls at only $.53 cents per pickleball ball.

It’s a budget ball, so it plays a bit differently than a $3.00 ball. That said, the Navona balls work fine for my Erne pickleball machine, and I would not play with these in big time competitive play as these balls felt a bit light.

That said, can you beat a $0.53 pickleball ball?

The Navona outdoor balls come in both yellow and green colors, but it also comes in a variety of other colors as well.

The final downside is the weight. These pickleball balls do weigh less than many other balls at 25 grams.

Runner Up Budget Under $0.75

The Asbocar USAPA Approved Pickleballs were previously the top outdoor budget pickleball, but I believe the AiteFeir outdoor pickleball balls currently dethroned that.

The AiteFeir balls were .$75 per ball, but it’s been hard to find them.

the AiteFeir’s played similar to other outdoor balls, and at that price point, I don’t think you can find a better ball.

I believe the price for both of these balls would also compete with Alibaba and AliExpress where I had been looking before.

Third Place Budget Ball

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this pickleball ball, but the price didn’t rival the AiteFeir’s which is why these moved to the runner up budget ball.

I found that this ball had quite a bit more bounce than the Franklin Sports X-40, the Onix Pure 2 Outdoor pickleball, and other balls that I tested.

So, if you like a big bounce to your outdoor pickleball play, then this ball is for you. I will also note that I won a very close match with this ball with a close friend that I had never won before.

And, I did that with this asbocar picklelball ball, and my favorite beginner pickleball paddle, which is less than $30 on Amazon.

So, while it’s a budget ball, I really love this ball and can’t wait to play with it again.

2. Best on Amazon

The Warping Point’s Ascent 40 balls remind me of X-40s and are often quiet a bit cheaper.

My pickleball buddies tend to be X-40 pickleball loyalists. And while, I love X-40s, I am always trying to find competition for the best outdoor pickleball balls.

So, I decided to try the Warping Point Ascend 40 outdoor pickleball balls. First, I like that the box had some design.

Next, I appreciated the black mesh carrying bag, even though it did feel very light weight.

I thought the ball itself had a nice design. I will say that it felt slightly smoother than the x-40 ball, but that didn’t bother me.

Finally, when I weight the ball, I found that the weight was around 27g, which is slightly heavier to the x-40 ball, which I definitely appreciate.

The Warping Point outdoor pickleball balls weigh 27 grams.

In terms of playability, I thought that the Warping Point balls played in line with the x-40s.

What I did for both sessions is had both x-40s and Warping Point balls on hand, and I frankly did not notice a difference apart from the slight feel difference of the balls.

In my opinion, if none of these work, I would argue that the fina honorable mention pickleball ball is the SLK Competition pickleball balls.

Balls I would Not Purchase Again

The Onix pure 2 outdoor pickleball definitely feels like the heaviest ball I’ve played with recently.

Per Amazon, the ball weighs 27.2 grams, which was noticably heavier than the Franklin X-40s that are 25.99 grams.

Because of the weight, my friend noted that the Onix pure 2 played more like a tennis ball, which was great for him with a tennis background.

I played racquetball, so I wasn’t able to capture the same advantage of him, and he was able to beat me 11-9 with this ball.

Consider Purchasing In Bulk

Thankfully, when you look on Amazon or wherever else you are looking, you generally will find a much bigger discount if you purchase in bulk.

For example, at the time of this writing, a Franklin Sports Outdoor Pickleballs – X-40 3-pack cost $9.47 on Amazon, but a 100-pack cost $147.43, which reduces the cost per ball from $3.16 per ball to $1.47 per ball.

If you can split costs with a friend, consider doing it.

Outdoor vs Indoor Pickleball Ball Differences

If you are playing mainly indoor pickleball, these pickleball balls may not apply to you. While you can play with outdoor pickleball balls, indoor pickleball balls have more holes and are often lighter because the balls don’t have to live up to the elements of wind, rain, etc. in outdoor play.

There are numerous differences between the balls, including that outdoor pickleball balls have 40 small holes while indoor pickleball balls have 26 large holes. While I could write out the differences, I found that Net World Sports graphic in their article does more justice, so I wanted to provide a picture and link to it if you’d like to learn more.

There are numerous differences between outdoor pickleballs, which make choosing the right ball essential to your game. If you are like me, check out some of the best outdoor pickleballs out there and figure out which one works best for your game.
