When I started researching pickleball paddles, one of my first Google searches was “what pickleball paddles does Ben Johns use?”, which brought me to the Joola Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16mm.
I decided to purchase around 15-20 paddles, including 2 premium paddles considering of the Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16mm and the SixZero Double Black Diamond.
After testing all of my different paddles, the Joola Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16 was the clear winner.
Since purchasing the paddle, I have tested and reviewed approximately 30-40 other pickleball paddles. While paddles such as the Volair Mach 2 Forza competes with my Joola Ben Johns for playing time, I find that it’s difficult not to come back to the Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16
1. Here’s why Joola Ben Johns Hyperion CFS paddle is amazing
The Joola Ben Johns Hyperion CFS has an incredible sweet spot, probably the best of all my paddles. In addition, the pop provides amazing control to make sure you are hitting your shots to the right area of the court.
I play a lot of singles pickleball. So, I appreciate that this paddle paddle has a perforated, anti-slip ridge grip and an elongated handle that does an excellent job of absorbing shock.
I find it especially great for two-handed shots.
The Carbon Friction Surface (CFS) technology features an advanced Carbon-Flex5 textured surface, which really ups the game when it comes to generating spin.
I immediately noticed how the aero-curve design boosts swing speed and cuts down on drag—it made a big difference during gameplay.
The carbon-forged handle is a standout feature for me. It adds both power and comfort, making the paddle feel solid and dependable in my hand.
I mentioned earlier, but the Hyperform edge wall does exactly what it promises: it enhances stability and expands the sweet spot. I couldn’t agree more with that claim!
Finally, the specially tuned reactive honeycomb core delivers a consistent bounce, which is a game-changer for precision and control.
2. Ben Johns Currently Plays with the Perseus 3s. Should You Buy that Instead?
A recent tournament image shows that Ben Johns switched to the Perseus 3s.
I have tested both the Perseus 3s and the Hyperion CFS 16mm, and I would not buy the Perseus 3s unless you are an advanced player (DUPR >=4.0).
Why?
The Perseus may have slightly more amazing technology, but the pop is completely different, and the sweet spot is also different than the Joola Hyperion CFS 16mm.
In addition, Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16mm is currently the top rated Amazon pickleball paddle because of its technology, but also its price tag.
For example, at the time of this writing, you could get this paddle on Amazon for under $170, while the Perseus is often $279.95.
Summing It All Up
The Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16mm continues to be my go-to paddle even after owning over 50 pickleball paddles.
Why?
The paddle has an amazing sweet spot, fantastic control, and ample power to win games against opponents I may have lost to before.
In addition, it’s the paddle Ben Johns (the world’s #2 player) played with, so you know you are getting a quality paddle.
